From Hawaii to Libya, the summer of 2023 was another testament to the devastating and deadly effects of climate change. Climate change and disasters are inextricably linked and should be addressed in tandem. Through its resilience programs, the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) has made a significant contribution to lowering disaster risk and building climate and disaster resilience across at least 16 countries, as documented in a recent report.
To further disseminate these lessons learned, CIF is convening an event on November 15, 2023, on our experience in funding disaster risk management (DRM) activities through climate resilience action. The session will draw on diverse perspectives, including those of recipient governments, donors, multilateral development banks, local communities, and youth. It will also cover how lessons from CIF’s existing portfolio can inform the design and implementation of CIF’s new and future programs on nature-based solutions, urbanization, and resilience.
After opening remarks by CIF interim CEO Luis Tineo, Paul Venton, Climate and Disaster Resilience Specialist and lead author of CIF’s Strengthening Disaster Risk Management in Climate Resilience Action report, will present the main findings. Then, participants will hear testimonies from the ground with ADB’s Piseth Long and World Bank’s Felipe Montoya Pino, on projects in Cambodia and Haiti. Jamaica’s Claire Bernard will offer insights from a small island state, while Rita Ideha of Ecobarter will represent the perspective of the youth. Emmanuel Kouadio, CIF's Resilience Program Lead, will provide closing remarks.
