“Managing the Impact of Wind Energy Development on Birds and Bats”

Following up the consultation meeting held in May 2012 in Washington D.C., a roundtable discussion on “Managing the Impact of Wind Energy Development on Birds and Bats” was held in Ankara, Turkey in September 6, 2012. The aim was to capture experiences and lesson related to birds and bats protection in wind energy development in Turkey.
Key stakeholders such as Turkish government officials, Non-governmental organizations (NGOs)/Civil society organizations (CSOs), Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) and the private sector discussed main challenges on biodiversity management in Turkey.
Key areas for future improvement include;
1. Capacity building on local experts to conduct a high quality of report which assesses the impact of wind power on birds and bats is needed.
2. It is important to develop standardized methodology to assess the impact on birds and bats including the development of sensitivity mapping and good practice guidelines of EIA.
3. The effective pre- and post- construction monitoring needs to be implemented to capture the real impact of wind power projects.
