An estimated 23 percent of total anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions (2007-2016) derive from Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU). Land (use) change is both a cause and consequence of global environmental change. Changes in land use and land cover contribute to climate change, which in turn negatively affects the provision of ecosystem services, exacerbating degradation processes of land and freshwater ecosystems.
Building on the decade-long experience of the CIF’s programmatic sustainable forest and climate resilient development portfolio that spans the Forest Investment Program (FIP), the Dedicated Grant Mechanism (DGM) and the Pilot Program for Climate Resilience(PPCR), the CIF’s new Nature, People and Climate Investment Program (Nature solutions) will advance sustainable, multi-sectoral approaches most suited to the target context—government, industry, or community-led models— and harness the potential of land resources and other ecosystems in climate action. The objective of this new program is to deploy concessional resources at scale to improve livelihoods and address climate change through the sustainable use of land and other natural resources, including coastal systems.
Through a facilitated High-Level Panel session, invitees will highlight country level lessons, experiences and leveraging efforts and pitch nature-based solutions as pivotal to cost effective and inclusive climate action. The session will draw on diverse institutional perspectives, including those of recipient governments, donors, multilateral development banks, bilateral organizations, private sector, academia and civil society organizations.
