Burkina Faso is a land-locked country in West Africa that is characterized by a tropical dry climate. It is located in the sahelian semi-arid belt and endowed with dry forests that offer rich and unique biodiversity. Although individually the plants of dry forests retain relatively low carbon stocks the vastness of the drylands of the Sahel hold tremendous opportunity for carbon sequestration in addition providing the basis of livelihoods for millions of people.

Burkina Faso has experienced sustained growth in recent years but a steadily growing population has increased pressure on the country’s natural resources. Agricultural expansion, overgrazing, wood removal for energy and domestic needs, as well as overexploitation of non-timber forest products have compromised the integrity of forest and woodland ecosystems.
